Inspiration in the Everyday

Taking photos from my everyday life and finding design inspiration in them. Inspired by my participation in the Quilt Design A Day (QDAD)  group on Facebook.

December’s inspiration is this Italian Police Lamborghini.

Italian Police's Lamborghini

My first design I focused on the racing stripes. Turned out like a funky spider web.

The second design I took the shape of the headlights and turned them into 2 half-square triangles. Then I really played with the layout to the point I can’t see the headlight shape anymore.

For my final design I was inspired by the thin lines from the siren on top of the car. (And decided at least one of my designs should feature Italian colors.)

November’s inspiration is this unit insignia.

Unit insignia

My first design I wanted to explore combining circle and hexagons. It’s not a common combination in quilting.

The second design I focused on the banner, but simplified the shape.

For my final design I wanted to do something with the octopus arms. I came up with wedges leading to a center shape. Then I played around with overlap and tiling.

October’s inspiration is a bike rack.

Bike Rack

My first design I shamelessly copied the bike rack. I felt like the single gray horizontal bar was a bit boring so I added in the small squares.

The second design started with the vertical dual bars. I played around a lot with placement and how I layered the elements.

For my final design I used the square from the sewer cover, layered the oval from the bike rack on top, then played around with the background color.

September’s inspiration is a circuit board. I spent a good portion of my summer cleaning out our work spaces and getting rid of old equipment.

Circuit Board

My first design started out as the lower left hand block. I then tiled the block, but a little differently than normal cutting off sections of the block so it looked a little more random.

The second design uses the same idea of circuits, but composed differently.

My final design ended up looking like watermelons, but I kind of like the ode to summer.

August’s inspiration is a bench.

Bench

My first design used the “L” supports as the anchor to the design.

The second design uses the spokes as the focal point.

For my final design I tried to fuse the cobblestones with the “L” shape of the bench. Finding balance in this design was difficult and I’m uncertain whether I achieved it.
